Protecting your business against DDoS attacks with Cloudflare

2021 was a busy year for perpetrators of DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks. With the global pandemic in full force and businesses more reliant on connectivity than ever, threat actors are using novel new protocols that are more difficult to defend against.

In the third quarter of 2021 alone, leading website security company and CloudMile partner Cloudflare observed and mitigated record-setting HTTP DDoS attacks, one of the largest botnets ever deployed (Meris), and more recently, ransom DDoS attacks on voice over IP service providers and their network infrastructure around the world. According to the company, DDoS attacks in industries such as Computer Software, Gaming/ Gambling, IT, and Internet companies increased by an average of 573% compared to the previous quarter.

While the majority of these attacks are small and short, they are increasing in frequency and can be especially dangerous for legacy DDoS protection systems or organizations without active, always-on cloud-based protection.

Scrubbing centers are no longer a practical solution

A DDoS attack occurs when multiple systems flood the bandwidth or resources of a targeted system, such as a website, in many cases from thousands of hosts infected with malware. Traditional approaches to mitigating DDoS attacks include utilizing scrubbing centers – centralized data cleansing stations where traffic is analyzed and malicious traffic is removed. However, scrubbing centers tend to be an impractical solution due to the fact that they create delays and cost too much to build and run.

Cloudflare mitigates DDoS attacks near the source

Cloudflare takes an entirely different approach by running DDoS protection from every server in every data center in its network, which spans 250 cities across 100 countries, boasts a capacity of 100 Tbps, and runs the full stack of DDoS mitigation services.

Essentially, Cloudflare’s Anycast architecture detects and mitigates DDoS attacks close to the source of attack, acting like an Internet immune system by using machine learning models to learn from and mitigate attacks against any customer.

This also ensures that Cloudflare’s DDoS mitigation solution doesn’t add any latency to legitimate traffic, providing customers the security they need without any cost to performance.
